People who join opposing social movements are in fact joining them for similar reasons.
People who join different political parties are in fact joining them for similar reasons.
People who join different religions are in fact joining them for similar reasons.
If yes, then...
In games we understand this and appreciate even
opponents but not in these matters. Why?

Joining Opposites for Similar Reasons...

Because people have different visions of the "Right Path". I think it's quite difficult to radically change from one paradigm of what's right and wrong to another. Very few people, for example, radically disagree with their parents. Those that do usually had pretty hard line parents.

But the reason to seek 'right path' are similar.

True, but there are many different opinions on what that is. I think optimism vs pessisism plays a big role.

"optimism vs pessisism"?
How?
| ViEiRA [Member] 2006-11-09 @ 14:50 |
Everyone has an opinion on how to change the world to make it a better place. How we shape this opinion into political affiliation often depends on a very basic view of human nature. For example, traditional Conservatives believe human nature is evil and must be constrained: socialists historically believe human nature is essentially good and is corrupted by flawed economic systems: liberals are guardedly optimistic and believe humans are rational and capable of making good choices.
Obviously there are exceptions to this - I'm a socialist who believes human nature has problems - but I believe most classical ideologies were formed from an optimistic, pessimistic or realistic view of human nature. People are often reluctant to change their political affiliation because it is rooted in their life experience of human relations.

I think that sometimes people are 'steered' in a certain direction by their parents.
John is Catholic, and therefore belif in the Catholic Church is the right way to go.
Chris is Jewish, and therefore belif in the Jewish Religieon is the right way to go.
Both have simlar reasons for their belifs, but their belifs are different. Are they tolerant of each other, would like to think yes, but as we know, a lot of 'wars' have been fought over belifs.
Mind you, so there has been over football.

There's also been peaceful resolution through football, and it was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. My Politics lecturer did an open lecture on it last year

I never knew that. That suprises me.
I did not mean an actual war Vox, more like the mob type wars between the so called football fans.

Well there was a war called the "football war". It was a border dispute. I think one of the countries involved was Honduras. The actual war kicked off at a football match, but had been brewing for a long time so football wasn't really to blame.
Friendlies have been used as tools of diplomacy or weapons amnesties.

I think that even if people are fundamentally doing things for the same reasons they don't neccessarily want the same outcome eg in sports some people play for enjoyment and some play to win.
This therefore leads to a conflict of interest that is based on the less appealing parts of human nature. We have and always will base our actions on animal instinct, which leads to bad/ good people existing in all walks of life.
Thanks for making me think Voxy xx

Nice response KLM. It made me think too. Though I am bit weak in that so I always ask questions.
So some animal instincts lead to good behaviour too, that's what you seem to suggest.
| ViEiRA [Member] 2006-11-09 @ 14:54 |
I agree that some instincts lead to good behaviour. Humans will always be inclined to do good or bad things and are ofetn capable of choosing, but no-one will do 100% good or bad things throughout his/her life. I think it's our numinous nature which leads us to question our behaviour and think in terms of rights and wrongs.

that is so right....the reason people dont appreciate this in the big issues is because if they did it would undermine their need to be in opposition. ?
