Death to Saddam...blow to justice???

Though I am no fan of Saddam nor his regime and his self destructive and vindictive policies.

I think the way regime was toppled. The way new government was imposed. The way Saddam was tried and the death sentence given...
...is mockery of international justice, democracy, sovereignty.
Death to Saddam is major blow to international justice.

This by no means justification of Saddam. Rather it has little to do with Saddam. In my mother tongue there is a saying,

"It is not sad that old woman dies (because one has to), but the death god becomes greedy"

I agree with rithompson how can we justify the justice dished out to him.

But on the other hand the goverment needs to be constant. If you take life then you forfit yours. If we do have standards were will we all end up?

In Canada, the death penalty was abolished many decades ago. In my religion, it is not up to mortals to decide who lives or who dies...

I am also glad to live in a country where the death penalty has been abolished, and am happy that my culture does not permit one human being to legally order the death of another.

But at the same time, the culture in Iraq is different and has been for some time. Saddam himself routinely carried out the death penalty and brought suffering and hardship to many Iraqi families.

So, much as I expect immigrants to Britain to fit in with British cultural norms and follow our laws and customs, I would also defend the rights of the Iraqis to sentence him to death, as that is their current culture.

  This is weird.. I've typed this and set it out in the public domain. And I thought it accurately reflected my opinion. And yet ever since I typed it 30 minutes ago, I've been fretting about it and wondering, if I said that in a face to face discussion with people, what would they think of me?
  
  So it seems that somewhere in my subconscious, I'm ashamed of what I thought was my opinion. Somthing has compelled me to come back and revise it, even take it back. Which just goes to show that the whole issue is even more complicated than I had thought. I think I'd better stop thinking and retreat back ont my shell. Please ignore me everyone.

    Corioboria you need not feel regret about your views as it stemmed basically from respect for different cultures. Your intention behind holding this view is well understood and it is not vicious.
    
    However the argument of culture is being used by powers to eliminate their opponents. Death to Saddam is more to do with imperialist culture than culture of Iraq.

It seems pretty complex to me - I am opposed to the death penalty.

I hope demoncracy is already and will be even more established in Iraq

But - if they are a demoncracy, do they have the right to decide on whether they believe in capital punishment - and, if this is their democratic decision, should I/western influences feel free to try to woo but not compel them to assume 'my' western view, otherwise, if a more western stance is taken on capital punishment, and this is imposed on the Iraq government, what is the difference between me and a dictator they have just been freed from?

Just thinking aloud.

    I think that is the essence of the question - has America, supported by Britain and others, in seeking to help Iraq on their journey towards being a demoncratic state, made things overall any better?
    
    They now have some of the outward indicators of demoncacy - elections, etc, but are these free and fair?

    But, just supposing, it had worked very successfully, the elections were fully free and fair, they were living in a demoncratic state, and the people of Iraq still belived in the death sentence, shouldn't they then have the right to maintain that as part of their criminal justice process, even if others in other countries disagree.
    
    I emphasise I am being theorectical here as fully appreciate Iraq us not yet free and fair.

      //If it was that and had it been that....// The fact of the matter is it is not democracy yet and the present government represents aspirations of less number of people than Saddam's regime, though Saddam himself was agent of then CIA against communists at the begining of his regime.
